Hey guys im trying to reinstall windows 7 OA on a new lenovo x201 that i just bought i dont want to try installing it only to find that i cant use the key that came with the computer, windows 7 pro 64 bit came preinstalled and i want to keep that version (and key) from the manufacturer on the laptop i have had problems in the past with the reinstalls on machines that had OEM verions of windows preinstalled on the box. Will i be able to use the license on the bottom of the computer if i get a copy of windows 7 pro? Will i need an 'oa' (what is that anyway?) version?
Any help would be appreciated, thanks. The easiest way is to use a Lenovo Win7 disc. If you do not have one and cannot obtain a Win7 disc through support, you can use the following instructions. I know Dell provides Win7 OS only discs free of charge under warranty. You should check w/ Lenovo.
If you do not have a Lenovo Win7 disk, you can use any non-manufacturer branded Windows 7 disk. That is, don't use Dell or HP brand disks because computer manufacturers put customizations on their disks which may cause unintended effects on your Lenovo. Some disks are locked to a specific version of Win7. To check if it is version locked, look for the file x: sources ei.cfg inside the DVD. This is a plain text file and you can open it with notepad or your favorite text editor to see the version. If no such file exists, you will be prompted to choose the version during the installation.
I, personally, have not come across a disk without this file. Remove this file to unlock the disk. You'll need something like PowerISO to edit the contents and make an ISO image without the ei.cfg file. PowerISO is not free, but at the same time, I'm not aware of any free software that can edit and rebuild an ISO file. While many applications can open an ISO and let you extract contents, only a few applications will allow you to edit an ISO. Next, download Magic Jelly Bean from: Download the ZIP file because it does not require installation. Run the application and copy down your Win7 key either in a text file or write it somewhere.
