We've been experiencing a problem at our site whereby the default Windows 7 audio driver for the OptiPlex 740 (which we have a lot of), the built-in Microsoft one known as High Definition Audio Device, sometimes tells users there's no audio output device installed and won't play any sound. The problem is intermittent. I've tried to download the latest SigmaTel driver for this platform from Dell, version 6.10.0.5866, but this file appears to be corrupted. The issue is that the file is the right size but fails to run and, on closer inspection, seems to consist entirely of null characters. I have attempted to download this file from three entirely separate locations and all other driver downloads work, so I don't think it can be a problem with our Internet connection. There are also forum posts from around the driver’s original release date which indicate that the file was working at some point in the past.

I noted that, while the driver was first released two years ago, the file modification date on the FTP site is given as 8:01am on 21 st June this year; perhaps this was when the corruption occurred? We desperately need this driver to resolve the problem. I've tried the next version down, 5515, which does fix the problem but sometimes produces 'choppy' sound, so I'm following the usual driver dogma by assuming that the latest version should solve this.
The OptiPlex support agents aren't being very helpful as they either don't understand what I'm talking about or just insist that it must be our Internet connection. Can anyone help me? Maybe someone already has this driver, or is somehow able to download it and send it to me (or just the extracted WDM folder)? Alternatively, if anyone knows whom I should be speaking to at Dell to get this file replaced with a working copy on the FTP site, I'd love to hear from you ASAP.
Any help much appreciated.
