Ati Mobility Radeon X600 Windows 7 Aero
DRIVER FOUND I have an Dell Inspiron 8600 with a Radeon 9600 Mobility chip in it that I upgraded to Win 7 today and found the same problem you are all experiencing. I remembered that Dell used to offer a Vista 32bit driver for this chipset and with a bit of searching on the Dell website found it. I now have my display running at 1680x1050 with a properly detected video card. The download can be found on Dell's website by searching for R153383 (The install file is R153383.exe) and the description for the driver update is 'ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 Series (ATI Portable Graphics Driver for Windows Vista 32-bit)'. The following link is for a direct download (60MB) on browsing the Dell FTP site after writing the rest of this I also found (60MB) not sure what OS it is for. Hope this helps you guys who have been having problems.
I've just upgraded a 5-year-old AMD system from XP to Windows 7 Ultimate and have a problem. The MS Upgrade Advisor gave it a clean bill of health for upgrading and the upgrade/installation went well.
Aug 30, 2009 FWIW, I'm using the Radeon Mobility X300 (same driver as X600) Vista driver ver 8.360 with Windows 7 Aero in an older Dell Inspiron 9300, and it appears to work fine. The minimize/restore of the windows sometimes seems a little hesitant. But, there are no black screen issues, or other weirdness that gets in the way of using Windows 7 in Aero mode. Posted September 7, 2006 ok. I dont understand this. I've installed RC1 and the mobility radeon x600 is supposed to be a card that supports Aero, however Aero is not enabled.
From what I can detect, the ASUS ATI 9600 series Radeon graphics card is causing the system to halt, black out, BSOD, mostly when I run Microsoft's Combat Flight Simulator 2. The driver that Windows 7 put in for me is not an ATI driver, just a compatible VGA one with no secondary screen capability.
I've been looking for a Windows 7 compatible ATI driver, to no avail. I found a Vista driver, but when I run it it aborts with 'Unknown OS'. The ASUSTek ATI graphics card is about 4 years old. Any help would be appreciated. Thanx & Cheerz, Geoff.

Should read something like: PCI VEN1002&DEV4150&SUBSYS27721002 BTW it might set the refresh rate to something your screen cannot support, in which case you have to startup in VGA mode to fix those. Or you could go back with XP.

Yes, 3D Mahjongg and Combat Flight Simulator 2 and mostly they play for a while normally and then the system just suddenly freezes. Sometimes CFS2's scenery window goes black and after a short wait I can stop the program get out and the system is OK.
But mostly it's a total freeze and a reboot is necessary. I can run CFS2 no problem if I disable HW acceleration in the CFS2 display options, but the scenery is bad and the screen is jerky. Should read something like: PCI VEN1002&DEV4150&SUBSYS27721002 I checked the properties of the MS compatible driver (WDDM) in Device Manager and there are four entries for the hardware ids. The first is: PCI VEN1002&DEV4152&SUBSYSC01A1043&REV00 It's an ATI 9600XT Radeon. I'll take a look at the driver.inf file and see how I can modify it. BTW it might set the refresh rate to something your screen cannot support, in which case you have to startup in VGA mode to fix those.
I don't know how to do that. Or you could go back with XP. Maybe someone else can you give you a better answer. I am actually using my Windows 7 system in multiboot (dualboot) with XP, so I can always go back.
I'd just like to move on with Windows 7, but I guess I'll have to change my mobo, cards and memory. It seems that although Upgrade Advisor says everything's OK, there are still HW incompatibilities. Read more: ATI Mobility Radeon 9600/9700 Drivers & Windows 7??

@ thefeds I recently installed Windows 7 on my Acer Aspire 1660 that runs on the ATi Radeon Mobile 9600/9700 GPU. So after installing W7, I ran into the same problem you had. I could only get my resolution to run at 1024x768. So after 3 days of scouring the internet I found a driver that works. On cnet's download.com, I came across the XP driver: I ran the program and the installation could not complete because it recognized that I was not running Windows XP/2000. So what I did was try to install the driver directly from the device driver window. Here are the steps I took: Right clicked on the display adapter - update driver software - Browse my computer - Let me pick from a list on my computer - Have Disk - and selected the CX76831 driver.the and wouldn't you know, it accepted it.
After the install, it prompted me to restart. Upon restarting, my resolution was at 1280x800. I registered on this forum just to give the good news to you and anyone else with this problem. Cheers to all James.
Hello All, Like everybody who has posted here, I installed Windows 7 (32bit) onto my Dell Inspiron 9200 which features a Mobility Radeon 9700 video card. And like everybody here, Windows 7 installed a generic VGA driver which was limited to a 1024x768 resolution, with no Aero support.
I tried modding the ATI Catalyst drivers with no success. I then tried manually installing the driver's inf file like was suggested in a previous post. This only worked so far as to allow me to have a 1440x900 resolution, but I had no Aero or 3D hardware support with this option. I am happy to announce to everybody reading this post that I have finally found a solution which works!
Go into the hardware device listing in Windows 7, select the current video card and manually update the driver. At this point you choose the driver options which are on the Windows 7 DVD. Obviously there is no Mobility Radeon 9700 listed, but there is a RADEON 9700 PRO available.
Choose the driver for RADEON 9700 PRO. You'll initially get a message saying that Windows 7 cannot guarantee the performance or compatibility of the driver, blah, blah, blah. Just install it anyway and reboot when it is done. Doing this, the first thing you'll notice is the resolution should be correct. In my case, it was at 1440x900. But at this point I still didn't have Aero working. To correct this, I simply ran the Windows Performance Index test.
Once the test was complete, I saw right away that Aero was working properly! Windows 7 gave me a Aero performance score of 3.4 and a 3D Gaming score of 4.1. Not bad considering this laptop is almost 6 years old! I hope this helps in getting your Mobility Radeon 9700 card working properly in Windows 7.

The driver can be downloaded there: Download the 'Catalyst Software Suite95 MB10.22/24/2010' file and execute (it will extract the files to a folder you will specify). And then, go to the Device Manager, double click on your video card under Display adapters, select the Driver tab, click on Update Driver, click on Browse my Computer for driver software, click on Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer, un-tick Show compatible hardware, click on Have Disk and select the directory where the driver files have been extracted (something like F: 10-02legacyvista32-64ddccc Packages Drivers Display LHINF CL95951.inf), click on Open and then on OK. In the list, just select RADEON 9700 PRO and click on Next. It's pretty straightforward then! Oh, do not forget to reboot! And do not forget to refresh your rating (Control Panel All Control Panel Items Performance Information and Tools).
My Gaming rating has gone from 1 to 3.7 and Aero is now working! I'm a happy man. Hello, I tried to do exactly what you mentioned and I still get a message saying a problem was encountered and could not install the driver. I've tried everything including the Mobility Modder to know avail. Any other suggestions?

I was going to bin my laptop, as I don't get on with XP since they realeased service pack 1 to 3 (original XP was the best version in my own opinion), and my Toshiba Satellite P30 just refused to work with Windows 7, as you all know, I was getting error 43 with my ATI Radeon Mobility 9600/9700 and no trick or 16+ years of being in IT and a geeky teenager got my no where for once, it was just one of those challenges that I spent way too much time on and eventually had to reside to the fact that I would never get it working. However I found your web site by chance and found the above instructions, quoted, and to my shock the've worked. I'm now going to up my hard disk space and memory, so I can stick to my old laptop.

You just don't need to download any Radeon driver. I did open Windows device manager and updated the graphics card driver manually, exactly like Zeropoint described. If you choose from the ATI list you got a very long one with many Radeon cards.
There I found Radeon 9600 and installed it. After a restart my resolution got up to 1280x800 and Aero Glass was enabeld automatically. Works very smooth and Windows Score is quite nice for my old notebook (2003). Driver is: 8.56.1.16. Sorry for digging up such an old topic, but since the problem is related, I'm hoping some of you are still around and might have encountered the same problem. Same problem as everyone else here, moved from XP to 7 on my old trusty Acer Aspire 1680 (Pentium M 2.0Ghz), no drivers for ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 64Mb.
Tried a few solutions from this topic and found many working drivers, some would work with Aero and some wouldn't, but all were capable of giving me 1280x800. The only problem common to all drivers is that the LCD doesn't turn off the backlight when it enters power save mode ('choose when to turn off the display' option). I can turn it off/on with Acer's Fn+F6 shortcut, but other than that Windows 7 doesn't seem to know that the backlight stays on. A black box also appears when I click the battery icon in the taskbar, right between the 'Select a power plan' and 'more power options', where the brightness bar should be. I noticed that whatever driver I choose (certified or not), the monitor disappears from the Device Manager, and if I return to the Standard VGA driver, it reappears. I tried a suggestion I found on a Microsoft forum, which was to return to the Standard VGA driver, change the monitor driver, then reinstall the Graphics driver. But I only have 1 compatible driver to choose from, and all others non compatible are the wrong resolution!
Did anyone encountered this kind of problem? If so, did you find a solution? I'll keep digging around to see if I find a solution, I'm even thinking of reinstalling XP on the 1st partition (the old one is still there with a 0x0A BSOD) just to see what driver it's using for the LCD, but I doubt that will be of any help. EDIT: I'm currently using DELL's 'ATI Mobility Radeon 9600/9700 Series' driver (ftp.dell.com/video/R153383.EXE), which is certified for Windows 7 and is accepted as compatible with my graphics card. However, still no monitors listed. I found a clean backup of XP so I restored it to the XP partition, went to device manager and it shows 3 default monitors as expected (LCD, VGA Out, S-Video Out).

Hi, I loaded my IBM thinkpad t42 with windows 7 Ultimate today, problem I have is that apparantly this graphic card or driver doesnt support aero?? I get this error The current video card may support Aero with a driver that is compliant with the Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM). Contact the manufacturer of your computer or video card for a WDDM-compatible driver. Video card driver does not support aero effect Please can someone point me in the right directions, as I cannot stand the basic look of windows 7, Thanks.
