Some highlights include scenes from Shurtleff College, which became Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, and the Moo and Cackle riots of 1963. These photographs date from the late 19th century to the 2000s. Series 6 contains negatives, many of which are copy negatives, which are separated into their own series because of a specific original numbering system and arrangement. These were created by SIUC Photographic Services, formerly a unit of University Communications. Series 7-10 were also created by SIUC Photographic Services and organized into their original numbering system.
These photographs date from 1950-1990. Biographical Note. Southern Illinois University was chartered in 1869 and opened its doors to the first class of entering students in 1874. Originally, the university was called Southern Illinois Normal University. 'Normal' Universities in 1874 were teacher's colleges, aimed at standardizing and improving public education in the state by providing more accessible college-level instruction to teachers. Southern Illinois Normal University was the second such university to be established in Illinois.
